Why We Need to Reconnect with Our Feminine Energy
“When a woman feels like she cannot be loved for simply who she is, she shifts into masculine energy.” ― Lebo Grand
Regardless if you are a man or a woman, we each have feminine and masculine energies within us. The Yin (feminine) and the Yang (masculine) identified by ancient Eastern philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine states that these two opposing yet complementary energies exist in every life form. When in balance, they intertwine and interrelate in harmony and produce a healthy and peaceful ecosystem. When they are out of balance, chaos and disturbance breaks loose, thus affecting the lifespan of this ecosystem.
This principle applies to every ecosystem, including the human body and on a larger scale, our entire planet.
The masculine energy within us humans manifests in logic, action, speed, force, dominance, etc. while the feminine energy manifests in fluidity, vulnerability, compassion, nurture, intuition, etc. Both energies are valuable and necessary as they counter but aid one another. They indeed complete each other.
What disconnects us from our feminine voice
For centuries, the feminine energy has been seen as weak and inferior. As a result it’s been suppressed and dismissed in many cultures and societies. One of the ways that’s done is by silencing the feminine voice therefore disconnecting us from feminine expression and the feminine energy within each of us.
I didn’t know it then, but the disconnect from my own feminine voice began at a young age. My father treated me like his first-born son and taught me to be tough and competitive. Whenever I shrunk back from something I dreaded doing or felt lost or afraid, he taunted and ridiculed me in hurtful ways. I associated my emotions, especially vulnerable ones with weakness and humiliation. Those associations were further reinforced by society in general as I got older.
For the majority of my life, I tried to prove myself by strengthening my logic. Whenever I wanted to express my feelings, I held back looking for facts and reasons to justify those feelings. Doing that also disconnected the masculine and feminine energies within. I stopped listening to my own feminine voice because I told myself it’s silly and of no value, while resenting how loudly it desperately wants to be heard. The Yin and Yang parts of me were no longer friendly, they were in constant conflict.
Everytime someone says to us: “You’re too emotional”, “Stop being so sensitive”, or “Keep your feelings to yourself”, our feminine voice is silenced.
Everytime someone pushes us to be productive against our body’s needs; to be aggressive when it is not in our nature; or to do something that contradicts our values, our feminine energy is undermined.
And when we listen and believe those who try to diminish our feminine voice, we diminish our own powers.
We each carry centuries of preconditioned ideas that the masculine energy is superior, because it represents strength, productivity, dominance, and glory. However, a keen spirit knows that the balance and longevity of an empire is maintained by the grace of feminine energies of love, compassion, support, and justice. Yet, our society can’t seem to give enough credit to all that femininity is responsible for.
Over the years, sadly, we’ve lost the ability to use our feminine voices appropriately because it took a back seat to the loud and robust masculine voices. We had to fight for our pains and concerns to be heard.
How to reconnect with our feminine voice once again
We reconnect to our feminine voice by recognizing its value and its power.
Increasing our feminine voice is not about diminishing the masculine, but about not allowing our society’s overvalue of the masculine voice to shadow the feminine.
We reconnect and strengthen our feminine voice by holding our own.
Every time we express our needs or expand our compassion to include rather than exclude, we give more volume to the feminine voice; Every time we acknowledge our intuition and imagination, we reconnect to our divine femininity. Not only that, we give our world a chance to restore its balance and harmonize the masculine and feminine energies once more.
We’ve seen the great accomplishments the masculine energy can produce over centuries; we’ve also seen some of the great destructions it has caused. There is an urgency for the feminine voices to come through louder and clearer in the here and now, ironically to communicate the need for what’s softer and more compassionate in the world. Not only for our individual mental health but for the collective well being of the human race and our planet.
Our femininity nurtures and supports all ecosystems. Without it, nothing lasts. When that voice conveys a need, the system should listen. When the feminine energy is cherished and fluid, it is a tower of strength. It is willful. It is abundant. It is anything but weak. And it can only be restored to fruition if we each recognize its value.
