How to Grow and Nurture a Healthy New Relationship (With Helpful Tips from Gardening)

With Spring being the prime season for renewal and new beginnings, it’s no surprise that it’s also a popular season for new romantic relationships to blossom. Though, in our attention-deficit era, cultivating a new and lasting relationship may seem challenging or even impossible for many singles. Fortunately, building a healthy, long-lasting relationship isn’t too different from growing a plant from a seedling, and Mother Nature knows best.

1. Plant the seed in a warm and nurturing environment

Beginning a new relationship and planting a seed have a lot in common. Much like introducing a seed to a brand new environment, a new relationship takes some sensitivity and warmth to get it going. Be sure to observe, take cues, and handle with care.

2. Give it space to propagate

Much like seeding, a new relationship needs a little space to aerate in order for each person to breathe and adjust to a new energy and dynamic; not to mention an important period to establish trust with one another. It’s within that comfortable space, a new relationship can truly be allowed to develop deep roots.

3. Water it consistently and appropriately

Consistently giving a new relationship what it needs is what will keep it alive and allow it to grow. One of those things is attention. Every person is different which is what makes every relationship different. Tending to your unique relationship needs is important, but take cues not to drown it with “too much water.” A little every day goes a long way.

4. Provide it with extra nutrients periodically

Much like feeding plants and flowers with additional nutrients every once in a while, relationships need a little extra excitement every now and then. Though similarly, overdoing it can cause unnecessary stress and burnout. So communicate your love languages with your partner, bring a thoughtful gift or plan a special outing that you both can enjoy when the time is right.

5. Watch it flower and bear fruits

Seeing your relationship blossom is a beautiful experience! When everything is going great and you’re both feeling loved, your relationship starts to take a wonderful rhythm of its own. Communication and plans come together more effortlessly; you may even start to talk about the future, because you’ve established comfort and trust from all the nurturing you’ve given to the relationship. You’re now truly harvesting the joy your relationship brings you!

6. Continue to nurture it every day even after the flowers have faded and the fruits have been harvested. They will return year after year with proper care.

Nurturing a relationship doesn’t end after the feeling of newness dissipates. Your relationship will continue to grow and bear fruits with proper attention and care. It may even evolve, branch off, and create a legacy. Continue to patiently water, feed, and transplant as needed and you are sure to experience the joy it brings for years to come!
