Meditation and the Profound Experience of Love: 4 Types of Higher Love

All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!
— Rumi

There have been countless reports from meditators all around the world of their profound spiritual experiences during deep meditations. Among them, visions, sounds and knowledge are most common. There have also been reports about experiencing feelings of bliss and deep sense of love, and that is what I’m most interested in talking about here.

I consider myself a passionate person, with a zest for life and compassion for all living beings. I try to fill my life with everything that sparks a sense of love, from the food I eat, places I go, books I read, to the people I’m with. Yet, none compares to the profound experience of love I’ve felt during some of my deep meditations. They are as mysterious and miraculous as the existence of love itself. During each occurrence, I found myself in a deep state of bliss, enveloped in an indescribable feeling of love, and crying tears of joy uncontrollably. I felt it from deep within, but also from above and around me. It’s a love so pure and powerful that I can only classify it as divine love.

So where does this love come from?

I first started meditating in 2003, then started taking an interest in energy work in 2006. From my years of practice and the sensations I’ve experienced, I can describe 4 types of connections I’ve formed that allow me to access this deep sense of love in different ways. Your own experience and interpretation may be different from mine.

Love from higher self

You may have heard the term “higher self” from many different sources, and they all may have a different definition of what it is. This is my interpretation and connection to what the higher self is.

Your higher self is a part of your human self. It is free of fear and doubt, and societal programming. Because of that, it is connected to higher wisdom and serves as a conduit between your everyday mind and higher wisdom. The higher self is often associated with the pineal gland (third eye in the chakra system). And because of its location in the brain and its function, the association is rather fitting.

The higher self is a part of you that sees you for who you truly are and is capable of the most unconditional love and compassion — it is a more evolved version of yourself. Your higher self is always there for you and is in tune with the answers you are looking for. In a sense, your higher self is your future self.

Your higher self is always trying to break through the barriers, whether from past traumas or societal programming, to better communicate with you. From time to time, during moments of clarity, you will be able to feel a connection with your higher self that encourages you to let go of fear and doubt and make decisions based on love and compassion. Love from your higher self often gives you a sense of optimism and can be very healing at the same time. It is a type of love that reminds you to shed all self-judgment and makes you feel that everything is okay.

Love from your guides

You may have also heard terms such as spirit guides, ancestors, and guardian angels from many different sources. Here, I am simply referring to guides of any nature, who are connected to you and looking after you.

Your guides are your biggest support team from another dimension. They are here to help you fulfill your purpose as well as resolve ancestral patterns. It is part of their evolutionary process as well. Like your higher self, your guides are always trying to communicate with you. Because they are not in human form, they may use numbers, symbols, senses, etc. in order to get the message to you.

The love you feel from your guides can often come through as the feeling of family love. It’s the kind of love that makes you feel you are never alone. Regardless if you understand it, think you deserve it, or think it’s even possible, you have a family of loving supporters who are always with you trying to help you navigate this physical world. They are just not always able to get your attention in the way they communicate with you.

Universal love

This is a beautiful and wonderful love from the universe at large. What does that mean? We humans are a part of a big ecosystem made of galaxies, solar systems, planets, down to the bees, the soil, the air and water. However insignificant we may feel in comparison, we are needed on this earth and play an important part in the evolution of this living, breathing planet of ours, and possibly our whole galaxy. Every living being we coexist with has a certain vibration, including the vibration of love. When we love, we connect to their vibration of love.

This type of love nurtures coexistence and allows all living beings to be kinder to one another. When we connect to universal love, we start to look at all living beings the same as we are — each playing an important part in this vast ecosystem, on our own evolutionary journey. Even if our links are invisible, we are only degrees removed from directly supporting one another, and it is in all of our best interest to love and coexist well together.

The feeling of universal love can come through as a deep sense of belonging, and you tend to feel it around your body. If you ever feel like you were born into the wrong place and the wrong time, this love will let you know that you belong right here and right now, and we need you.

Love from Source

The term Source can also have many different interpretations, and many associate it with God or Spirit. I will simply refer to it here as a higher source of which we are all connected to, or the universal source of love.

The energy of love is of higher frequency, and we, as humans are naturally drawn to that frequency, because it feels so good. It is happy and healthy, our mental and emotional wellbeing depend on it, and there are scientific studies that show love extends our lives.

It is a human need to give and receive love. Though too many of us perceive love as something external, that the only way of feeling love is from other human beings or through gifts or affirmations, it is a source energy we can all connect to at any time. If you believe we all came from the same source of creation, then we were all born with the same love instilled in us, regardless if we felt loved by our family, friends or peers. That means we all can be a source of love as well, without external influence. Love is within all of us. Love is what we are.

The feeling of divine love, or love from source is an elated feeling of utter ecstasy. When that feeling arises, you can't help but believe there is a much higher source watching over all of us, waiting to feed us the kind of energy our primitive minds cannot yet comprehend or sustain. During the experience of receiving divine love, you might naturally feel total surrender to the love that wants to wash over you. You might also gain a new and profound perspective of how you want to view your life. It is an experience of love that will be deeply embedded in your psyche you will never forget.

The different kinds of love I describe above are interconnected and can often be felt simultaneously. When you connect to one, you will most likely connect to all. At times, the feelings of love you experience can be incredible. So the next question becomes, how can I feel this way more often? And can this love be sustained while carrying on with my daily life?
